About Newry Pride

Newry Pride is organised by the LGBTQ+ Women's Group Newry, a community group in the Northern Irish border city. The first edition was run by the Newry Rainbow Community and passed off without counter-protests, unlike the early Prides held in nearby Belfast. After a multi-year hiatus, driven partly by funding gaps and partly by the pandemic, the event has returned to the city's calendar, now carried forward by a new group of organisers.

At its centre is a parade through the city, ending at Marcus Square. A free open-air concert follows there, alongside family-friendly activities such as craft corners, circus acts and face painting, plus info stalls from local LGBTQ+ organisations. In the evening, several pubs across town pick up the thread with their own programmes, from live bands to drag and cabaret shows.

In the week before the parade, a smaller programme runs alongside it: a film screening, a literature evening, a run along the Newry Greenway, and a panel discussion on rights. Organisers place particular emphasis on solidarity with the trans community, given the wider political debates in Northern Ireland.

Newry Pride presents itself as a celebration for the whole family and a clear statement: even a small border city between Belfast and Dublin has its place on the island's queer map.

About Newry

Newry, a dynamic border town in Northern Ireland, boasts a thriving Pride movement that brings the local LGBTQ+ community together in celebration and solidarity. Pride events feature vibrant parades winding through the city's streets, drawing participants and supporters from across the region to champion equality and acceptance in a place shaped by its unique cultural and historical context.

The local LGBTQ+ history in Newry reflects broader struggles and triumphs in Northern Ireland. From eras of legal challenges and social stigma, the community has grown resilient, building visibility through persistent advocacy. Local leaders, including council figures, often lead these parades, underscoring institutional support and marking a shift toward greater inclusivity amid the town's diverse religious and political landscape.

These gatherings offer more than marches; they include live music, art exhibitions, and panels discussing identity, rights, and community building. The atmosphere blends Irish warmth with a commitment to global Pride traditions, inspired by historic uprisings for queer liberation. For visitors, Newry's Prides provide an intimate glimpse into regional activism, contrasting with larger urban events while sharing the same spirit of joy and defiance.

Newry Pride stands as a beacon in a border area, fostering unity and dialogue. It empowers youth to embrace their identities and educates the wider public on the ongoing journey toward full equality. With streets alive in rainbow colors and crowds pulsing with energy, these events create lasting memories and reinforce the town's role in the UK's evolving LGBTQ+ landscape.
