About Oestersund Pride
Once a year, the northern Swedish city of Östersund in the Jämtland region turns into the stage for Östersund Staaren Pride. RFSL Jämtland Härjedalen, the regional branch of the Swedish national association for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer people, organizes the festival. Across several days, a packed programme of talks, workshops, film screenings and panel discussions unfolds. Topics range from healthcare and blood donation rules to queer perspectives within Sámi culture, rounded off by literary readings. Drag holds a firm place in the line-up, including performances and workshops by drag queen Octavia Riot. The choir Regnbågskören, too, has become a fixture through its own rehearsals and performances.
In Badhusparken sits the heart of the week: the Pride Park, where associations, political parties and businesses run stands and a stage programme creates space for exchange. The Pride parade forms the high point, following a roughly two-kilometre loop through the city centre and filling the streets with music, dancing and rainbow flags. In the evening, the Pride party takes over with DJs and live performances, conceived as a protected space for adults. A shared brunch the next morning traditionally closes out the week.
