About Novara
Novara has its own Pride, but it does not happen every year. Novara Pride is organised by NovarArcobaleno, a volunteer-run LGBTQIA+ association active in the city and its province. For one edition, the collective Collettivə Bruna and Agedo Novara, the local group of parents and relatives of queer people, joined as co-organisers.
The first march took place in Novara some years ago. The pandemic caused a two-year break along the way. According to the local press, around two thousand people joined each of the last two marches. The parade went through the city centre, and in the days before it a Pride Week offered further events around the city.
After that, the association skipped two years in a row. It had just elected a new board, and everyone involved works on a voluntary basis alongside their jobs. The group said it did not have the time or energy to put on a Pride the way it should be done. Instead, members travelled to the Pride marches in Turin and Alessandria. The association has said it would like to bring the parade back to Novara. Whether and when that happens is usually announced at short notice on the channels of NovarArcobaleno and Novara Pride.
If you plan to visit in early summer, check beforehand whether a march is scheduled that year. If not, the larger Pride events of north-west Italy are close by: Milan and Turin are an easy train ride away and each holds a much bigger Pride march of its own.
There is no special international programme attached to Novara Pride. It is a small, locally run event that depends on a handful of volunteers, and it takes place when the people in town are able to make it happen.
