About Maplewood
Maplewood has no pride parade of its own. The suburb of just over 42,000 people borders Saint Paul to the northeast, and residents celebrate pride in the Twin Cities. Maplewood itself has hosted only the occasional event, such as a June pride barbecue with drag entertainment. There is no regular march through town.
The big one is Twin Cities Pride in Minneapolis. Every June the nonprofit stages a festival in Loring Park and a parade along Hennepin Avenue downtown. Hundreds of thousands turn out, admission is free, and the programme spans several music stages, hundreds of vendor booths, family picnics and a run. A recent family day was held at Como Park in Saint Paul, a short drive from Maplewood.
Saint Paul Pride is smaller and more of a neighbourhood affair. It is also free, with live music, family activities, arts and crafts, food stalls and a short walking parade of its own. If the Minneapolis crowds are too much, this is the better fit.
The rest of the year works the same way. Queer bars, groups and meeting places are in Saint Paul and Minneapolis, not in Maplewood. During pride season the suburb makes a quiet base, with the events a drive away. Dates and venues change from year to year, so check the current programmes published by Twin Cities Pride and Saint Paul Pride.
