About Broken Hill
Broken Hill is a remote mining town in the far west of New South Wales, home to around 17,000 people and, geographically, closer to Adelaide than to Sydney. There is no long-established, generations-old Pride movement with its own parades here — the town is simply too small and too isolated for that.
Broken Hill became known to queer travellers mainly through the cult film "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert", part of which is set here, linking the town to Australia's drag and camp heritage ever since. For years, the Broken Heel Festival celebrated that legacy, though it is no longer running.
Organised queer visibility in Broken Hill is recent: the town only very recently held its first-ever LGBTQIA+ festival, "Rainbow in the Outback". It emerged as a successor project once the Broken Heel format ended, and now brings drag, music, and community programming to town once a year.
Outside that annual event, the local queer infrastructure is very limited: there are no permanent gay bars, clubs, or saunas. Travellers looking for a bigger, year-round scene will generally find it in Adelaide, roughly 500 kilometres away. Broken Hill's appeal lies in its open, direct outback hospitality and its one big annual gathering, not in an established scene.
