About Katherine
Katherine is in the Northern Territory, about 320 kilometres south of Darwin on the Stuart Highway. Only a few thousand people live in the town itself. For somewhere this small and remote, it has something unusual: a Pride festival of its own.
It is run by Top End Pride, the organisation behind the Darwin Pride Festival. It started as an offshoot of the Darwin program, a roadshow that included a stop in Katherine. Interest was strong enough that the town then got its own festival, spread over several days in June, close to the Darwin dates.
The program is small but varied. Past editions included an opening reception at the Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre, a drag story time at the town library, community forums, a free picnic in the Town Square and a night of drag bingo. There is no big parade. The festival is aimed at locals, at queer young people and at families in a region with very few other places to turn to.
Katherine has no bars or clubs with a queer crowd. For more, head to Darwin, which hosts the larger Darwin Pride Festival in June and is home to the organisations that work across the Territory.
Dates and programs change from year to year, so check the Top End Pride and Katherine Town Council websites before you travel.
