The LGBTQ+ community in Canmore, a charming town nestled in Canada's Rocky Mountains, has seen vibrant growth through the Canmore Pride Society, established on August 12, 2021. Formed amid COVID-19 restrictions in May 2021, the society aimed to build a safe, welcoming space for queer residents and visitors in the Bow Valley area, where Pride events had been scarce compared to nearby Banff and other spots.
Canmore's inaugural Pride Festival, held from September 16-19, 2021, was a historic milestone. It kicked off with a flag-raising ceremony at the town hall, where the Pride flag flew alongside Canada's and Alberta's—lowered to half-mast in remembrance of residential school tragedies. Mayor John Borrowman highlighted the festival's role in fostering visibility, belonging, and celebration of diversity. Free events included queer-focused yoga, mindfulness sessions, and a Two-Spirit performance at Centennial Park, drawing community support and emphasizing inclusivity for all ages.
Building on this, the society hosted a family-friendly Solidarity Walk in 2024 with powerful speeches from local members. Initiatives like 'Stories of Queer Canmore,' partnered with the Canmore Museum, collect personal coming-out narratives, reminding everyone that journeys are unique and valid. Additional programs offer sliding-scale counseling for 2SLGBTQIA+ adults by queer counselors, alongside volunteer drives and donation calls to sustain year-round support.
