About Oeckeroe
Öckerö is an island municipality in the Gothenburg archipelago with just under 13,000 residents. The reason it has a Pride of its own goes back to a dispute over a flag. When Gothenburg was celebrating West Pride, the conservative majority on Öckerö's municipal council voted not to raise the rainbow flag, citing local rules that allowed only the Swedish flag. The vote was close and made headlines across the region.
The response came from the islands themselves. Residents founded the association Öckerö Pride and organized a festival of their own. More than a thousand people turned up to the first edition. The municipality ended up raising the rainbow flag that day after all and later changed its rules: today it flies the flag for both West Pride and Öckerö Pride.
Öckerö Pride is a culture and Pride festival with a stage program, music and performances. It takes place on one day in late May or early June, in recent years around the harbor of Hönö Klåva on the island of Hönö. The association is run by volunteers, and the date and program are published on its website and Facebook page.
Anyone looking for more can head to Gothenburg a few weeks later. In June the West Pride association hosts a large Pride festival there, with a parade, a cultural program and parties all over the city.
