About Kufstein Pride
Perlen Pride brings Kufstein together once a year for an event that mixes sport, show and political statement. It is organised by the Pride Tirol association together with FH Kufstein Tirol university of applied sciences, backed by the City of Kufstein, the municipal utility Stadtwerke Kufstein and the Kufsteinerland tourism board.
The day opens with a colour run, first a shorter one for kids, then a five-kilometre run for adults. Drag shows and speeches from politics and the community follow on stage, before the main parade circles the Kufstein fortress and turns the old town into a wash of colour. The gathering point and starting spot is Fischergries, right beneath the fortress walls. A second drag show closes out the official programme, after which the celebration moves into afterparties around town.
Kufstein sits in the Tyrolean lowlands on the border with Bavaria, with its fortress rising over the old town as the city's defining landmark. Perlen Pride makes deliberate use of that backdrop: the parade route loops all the way around, keeping the fortress in view for the entire march. For a small town in an otherwise fairly conservative region, that is a pointed choice.
The name Perlen Pride, German for Pearl Pride, plays on the pearl as a symbol of something valuable that only takes shape under pressure. That idea runs through the whole event: visibility for queer people in a region where it is not a given. The partnership with the local university also brings a younger, student perspective into the mix and gives the Pride an institutional foothold in the city. Anyone who shows up for Perlen Pride gets more than a parade: a full day that ties sport, entertainment and political message into one shared programme, right in the middle of Kufstein's old town.
About Kufstein
Kufstein has its own Pride, called Perlen Pride (Pearl Pride). It takes place in the autumn and is held as a political demonstration for the rights of queer people. The registered organiser is the association Pride Tirol, which also runs the big parade in Innsbruck. Partners include Kufstein Tirol University of Applied Sciences with its queer group Q+You, and HOSI Tirol. The town's diversity office, the municipal utility company and the Kufsteinerland tourist board support the event.
The gathering point is the Fischergries, an open space on the bank of the Inn. There is a stage with speeches and music, and from there the parade walks around the fortress and back.
Kufstein sits right on the border with Bavaria, between Munich, Innsbruck and Salzburg.
The largest Pride in the state is Pride Innsbruck. Pride Tirol organises it in summer together with HOSI Tirol, the oldest queer organisation in Tyrol. The parade runs through the centre of Innsbruck, where HOSI also has a community centre that is open all year. If you want to help with Perlen Pride or run a stall, the contact is the Pride Tirol association.
Outside the Pride dates, HOSI Tirol is the main point of contact for people from the Kufstein area. Its community centre on Kapuzinergasse in Innsbruck holds an open evening once a week, with free entry and no need to register, and the association offers free counselling for queer people.
