About Barnsley
Barnsley sits in South Yorkshire, between Sheffield and Leeds. The town holds its Pride in summer under the name Barnsley Pride, run by the group Pride Barnsley. It is part of Barnsley’s Big Weekend, a town-centre festival over several days organised by Barnsley Council, and entry to the events is free.
Pride takes the Saturday of the festival weekend. The main stage stands in Mandela Gardens, a green space right next to the town hall. On the same day the brass band festival Brassed On! and the Mayor’s Day take place in the town centre, so the Pride crowd mixes with families from all over Barnsley. Music and stage acts alternate through the day, and the whole thing is set up as a street party open to everyone rather than as a march.
The council shows its support outside Pride as well. For LGBT+ History Month in February the rainbow flag was raised at the town hall for the first time. Libraries put together collections of queer e-books, schools received the “Uncovered” resource pack on how LGBT+ people lived in the area in the past, and Barnsley Museums put objects from their collections on display.
One story that keeps coming up is that of Maurice Dobson. The miner and war veteran lived openly as a gay man with his partner Fred Halliday in the village of Darfield, east of the town, where the two ran a shop together. Dobson left the house and his collection of antiques to the public, and it is now the Maurice Dobson Museum and Heritage Centre.
In England the Equality Act protects people from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender reassignment, and same-sex couples have been able to marry for more than ten years. If you want to carry on celebrating after Barnsley Pride, the nearest large Pride events are in Sheffield and Leeds, both less than an hour away by train.
