About Worksop
Worksop is a market town in the north of Nottinghamshire and the main town of the Bassetlaw district, with around 45,000 residents. It has had its own Pride since the mid-2010s. The event was founded by Crystal Lucas, who grew up in Worksop and led the organisation as its main organiser for many years.
The first Worksop Pride was a small gathering at the Masonic Hall off Queen Street. Over the years it grew into a street festival in the town centre, which the local paper describes as the largest event in the town's annual calendar. It takes place in summer. The day starts at the railway station, where people gather in bright colours. The parade then walks along Carlton Road and Bridge Street to the Old Market Square, where the main event is held.
The square hosts two stages. The main stage features tribute acts, singers and drag performers, while the second, the Rainbow Stage, gives space to local talent. There is also a market area, food stalls, a bar and free fairground rides and face painting for children. Entry is free and the day is aimed at families as much as at the LGBTQ+ community. A ticketed afterparty is run by a separate events company.
Pride in Worksop is linked to other events in the district. Harworth and Bircotes Pride, a smaller Pride in the north of Bassetlaw, used arts funding from the district council to build a Chinese-style dragon called Dottie, which has led the parades in both places.
The event depends on a small group of volunteers. After Crystal Lucas stepped back and a planned successor could not take on the role, one edition had to be cancelled. The organisers have said they hope to find new leadership so that Worksop Pride can continue. Current dates and plans are posted on the Worksop Pride social media channels. Harworth and Bircotes Pride takes place separately.
