About Boden
Boden has its own Pride. Boden Pride is organised by Boden Event together with RFSL Luleå och norra Norrbottens län, the regional branch of the Swedish LGBTQ federation RFSL. The branch is based in Luleå but covers the northern part of Norrbotten county, Boden included. For a town of this size, having a Pride festival of its own is not something to take for granted.
The festival is not a single parade day. It runs over several days at different venues in the town centre. The programme typically includes talks, work by queer artists, activities for children and young people, creative workshops and a Pride parade with music and banners. At past editions RFSL has screened short films, run a poster and badge workshop and hosted a talk on asylum law for LGBTQI refugees. The film strand has grown into the Boden Queer Film Festival. A meet-up for asylum seekers and newly arrived queer people has also been part of the programme.
The character follows from that. It is closer to a town festival with political and cultural content than to a big street party. Anyone expecting a club night with international DJs will be disappointed. Anyone curious about what queer visibility looks like in a garrison and railway town in the far north will get an honest picture. Dates, venues and programme change from year to year and are announced by RFSL Luleå and Boden Event shortly beforehand. Recently there were also buses from Luleå to the festival.
The nearest larger Pride in the region is Luleå Pride, also run by RFSL Luleå. Luleå is a little over half an hour away and is where most visitors arrive anyway, since the airport is there.
Claims of Arctic landscape parades, multilingual programmes for international guests or a particular draw for visitors from the UK or the US cannot be backed up. Boden Pride is a small, locally organised festival that depends on people who live there.
