About Montevideo Pride
The Marcha por la Diversidad is Uruguay's main Pride march. It moves through Montevideo every year on the last Friday of September, organized by the Coordinadora de la Marcha por la Diversidad, a coalition of Uruguayan LGBTQ+ organizations.
The march starts at Plaza Cagancha in the city center and ends at Plaza 1° de Mayo, at the corner of Avenida General Flores and Yatay, where a closing event with live music takes place. The afternoon before the march itself features a "Previa," with craft stalls, local businesses, and DJ sets.
The Marcha combines a celebration of sexual diversity with a political demonstration. Its slogan changes from edition to edition, but the core demand stays the same: equal rights for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. The city of Montevideo supports the event with infrastructure along the route, including a support point for victims of violence and hydration stations.
With thousands of participants, the Marcha is one of Uruguay's largest public gatherings and is regarded as one of South America's major Pride events.
Montevideo's Secretaría de la Diversidad and a number of civil society groups are also involved in organizing the event alongside the Coordinadora. Together, they are currently developing a multi-year action plan for the rights of sexual and gender minorities in the city.
