About Phoenix Pride

Phoenix Pride traces back to a political protest march organized in the early eighties by the Gay and Lesbian Pride Planning Committee. The first march went from Patriots Square Park to the Arizona State Capitol, with a few hundred people taking part at a time when many feared losing their job or their home if their sexual orientation became known.

The initiative later grew into a registered nonprofit organization, known today as Phoenix Pride. It now puts on two major events a year: a spring festival and, in the fall, a combined parade and multi-day street festival that ranks among the largest LGBTQ+ events in Arizona.

The fall festival brings together well over a hundred acts across several stages, along with booths run by local organizations, food vendors and a dedicated family area. The parade itself moves through downtown Phoenix and ends near the festival grounds. Proceeds from the event go toward a scholarship and grant program that Phoenix Pride uses to support queer projects and individuals across the region.

What began as a small, politically risky protest march has grown over the decades into one of the largest Pride celebrations in the American Southwest, one that still carries the memory of its roots as a visibility and civil rights movement.
