About Curitiba Pride

Curitiba's Parada da Diversidade is considered one of the very first LGBT+ prides in Brazil. Its founding coincides with the creation of ABGLT, the national Brazilian LGBT+ association. What started as a small gathering of a few dozen people has grown, over the years, into an event that regularly draws tens of thousands to the city center.

The parade is organized by the Associação Paranaense da Parada da Diversidade (APPAD). It traditionally starts at Praça 19 de Dezembro in the city's Centro Cívico district and moves toward downtown, usually along Avenida Cândido de Abreu or Avenida Marechal Deodoro. The exact route changes from edition to edition.

As with many Brazilian Pride marches, trio elétrico trucks define the scene: large sound-and-stage vehicles carrying DJs, drag performers, and singers as the parade moves through central Curitiba. Each edition carries its own political theme drawn from current issues facing the LGBT+ movement, from voting rights to healthcare access to the concerns of older queer people.

The parade is well established in Curitiba's political and cultural life. The city council has discussed recognizing it as intangible cultural heritage on more than one occasion. It should not be confused with the separate Marcha pela Diversidade, a newer event in Curitiba run by a different organization and held at another point in the year.

About Curitiba

In Curitiba, Brazil's vibrant southern hub, Pride events pulse with energy, drawing crowds to celebrate LGBTQ+ identity and resilience. These parades transform city streets into a sea of rainbow colors, blending music, dance, and activism to honor the community's journey toward visibility and equality.

The local LGBTQ+ scene has evolved from underground gatherings in hidden spots to a dynamic network of groups advocating for health, education, and rights. Pioneers built safe spaces amid challenges, fostering a culture of inclusion that embraces diverse identities including bisexual and trans individuals. Curitiba's Pride reflects this history, uniting locals and visitors in a shared commitment to progress.

For English-speaking travelers, Curitiba's Pride offers a welcoming mix of Brazilian flair and global solidarity. Parades feature massive sound trucks blasting samba and pop, with performances by local artists and international guests. Community-led initiatives highlight mental health support and anti-violence campaigns, resonating with worldwide queer struggles. The events often spotlight family participation, showcasing Brazil's evolving attitudes.

Key parades wind through upscale neighborhoods like Batel, where floats and dancers create an electrifying atmosphere. Side events include art exhibits, film screenings, and parties that extend into the night. Curitiba stands out for its green spaces repurposed for Pride picnics and rallies, providing serene backdrops to fervent calls for justice. It's a destination where celebration meets purpose, inviting all to join the movement.
