About Bensheim Pride

Bensheim's Pride began almost by accident. A local youth political group called for a rally on short notice, and what turned up was a single gathering on Beauner Platz with a handful of musical acts, nothing more. It was enough to prove there was an audience for it, and the event has grown since into a full day built around the same square in the town's old center.

The day now opens at noon with speeches on Beauner Platz, some of them explicitly political, before the crowd sets off around half past twelve on a march through Bensheim's town center. Back at the square, an afternoon diversity festival takes over: an opening address, live music, and a stage program that alternates between drag performances, comedy, and improv theater into the late afternoon. Once the stage falls quiet, part of the crowd regroups at the Stadtmühle nearby for an informal get-together that runs on into the evening. The evening before, a queer-friendly church service is held at Bensheim's parish church, a quieter counterpoint to the following day's program.

Organized by a loose working group rather than a registered association, the event runs on volunteer effort and donations rather than public funding, a point its organizers raise openly when asking for support. The exact route of the march and the names on the stage bill are traditionally announced only shortly beforehand, on the event's Instagram channel, once the details are finalized.

For Bensheim, a town not usually associated with queer visibility, the event has become an annual reminder that a rally on one square can outgrow its own modest beginnings without losing what made it worth starting in the first place: people simply showing up.

About Bensheim

Bensheim, nestled in the scenic Bergstraße region of Germany, boasts a vibrant LGBTQ+ community that comes alive during Pride celebrations. Local Pride events draw crowds to central spots like Beauner Platz, featuring colorful parades, live music, and community gatherings that celebrate diversity and inclusion. These occasions honor the historic Stonewall uprising, a pivotal moment when queer individuals stood against oppression, inspiring global movements for equality.

The local LGBTQ+ history in Bensheim reflects resilience and growth in a wine-rich area known for its picturesque vineyards. Community groups have long worked to foster visibility and combat prejudice, partnering with local politics and organizations to promote dialogue. For English-speaking visitors, Germany's Pride stands out for its blend of festive joy and activism—parades pulse with dance, costumes, and performances, while underscoring demands for anti-discrimination laws and transgender rights.

Pride in Bensheim thrives on broad local support, creating safe spaces for youth, families, and allies to unite. Events include art shows, educational workshops on queer topics, and international street food, making it a welcoming experience. Each Pride reinforces messages of acceptance, bridging cultures and generations in a timeless call for equality.
