The LGBTQ+ Pride movement in Guatemala traces its origins to profound tragedy and resilience. In 1997, the murder of transgender woman María Conchita Alonso in Guatemala City sparked the first informal march on October 11, when 24 friends walked from her funeral to Central Park to demand visibility and justice. This moment ignited a spark that grew into organized action despite deep-rooted conservatism influenced by the Catholic Church and evangelical groups.

The inaugural official Pride march occurred on June 25, 2000, with about 200 activists starting at La Bodeguita del Centro nightclub, proceeding to the National Palace of Culture, and ending at Pandora’s Box, where they unveiled a plaque honoring Conchita. The chant 'For respect for diversity' echoed through the streets. The event, now known as the Sexual Diversity and Gender Identity Parade or Guatemala Pride, has evolved into Central America's largest annual gathering, drawing thousands to Guatemala City each year. Milestones include 2004's debut of trans group Otrans-Reinas de la Noche and the 2006 march held in black mourning recent anti-LGBTQ+ killings.

Legally, same-sex relations have been permitted since 1871, but reality lags far behind: violence persists with over 20 targeted murders annually, often unsolved. Recent Prides, like 2023's vibrant display of colors, glitter, music, and youth energy, affirm 'We exist and resist with dignity.' Families, students, and allies from neighboring countries join, waving flags for every identity. Political turbulence amplifies anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric, yet progress glimmers—lesbian congresswoman Sandra Morán pushes anti-discrimination laws, and Inter-American Court rulings signal potential marriage equality. Guatemala's Pride embodies joyful defiance, blending celebration with urgent calls for rights in a hostile landscape.
