About Freital Pride

Just southwest of Dresden lies Freital, a town about to hold its first Pride — a milestone for a part of Saxony that has rarely seen queer visibility on this scale. The event is organised by a newly founded local Pride association, a sign that the local queer community has decided to step into public view.

The march sets off from the car park at Weißeritzpark and heads toward Freital-Deuben, passing the local bus station before continuing along Wilsdruffer Straße at its junction with Dresdner Straße. From there, the route leads on to its final point at Freital-Potschappel train station, tracing a path through several parts of town rather than staying on a single square.

Getting there is straightforward for anyone travelling from Dresden: bus line 160 runs from Dresden-Löbtau directly to the Weißeritzpark terminus, while regional trains RE3 and RB30 stop at Freital-Potschappel and Freital-Deuben, both within a short walk of the route. The bus connection is also step-free, making the event accessible to people who rely on barrier-free transport.

Freital sits in the district of Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains, an area shaped more by hiking trails and sandstone cliffs than by queer nightlife or activism. A first Pride here means something different than in Dresden or Leipzig: it is less about an established scene showing itself off, and more about a first, visible claim to space in a town where queer life has mostly stayed private.

For a town of modest size on the edge of a major city, that first step — a march through its own streets — is already the whole point.
