About Ilmenau Pride
Ilmenau's Pride march is a young but growing event in the Ilm-Kreis district of Thuringia. Like other German Prides, it traces back to the Stonewall uprising in New York, where queer people first pushed back publicly against police violence and discrimination. Out of that history grew a format that combines protest and celebration: a march followed by a rally with speeches, usually rounded off with music and information stalls. That basic shape carries over to smaller German towns as much as to the big cities.
Ilmenau's edition runs under the slogan “Always here, always queer.” The organisers use it to make one point clearly: queer people in the Ilm-Kreis are not a recent arrival, they have always been part of local life. The first march drew around 450 participants, a strong turnout for a small town, and a sign that the wish for visibility does not stop at the edge of the big cities. Rally speeches at events like this one typically address discrimination, equal rights and support for the local queer community, alongside the more festive parts of the day.
With that, Ilmenau joins a growing list of young Pride events in smaller Thuringian towns. For the Ilm-Kreis, the march was the first of its kind, and it has since continued into a second edition.
