About Kassel PrideAs of 2025

Kassel Pride is the yearly Pride event held by the queer community in northern Hesse. It is organized by an open alliance of individuals and groups that keeps its account with, and can be reached through, the Queeres Zentrum Kassel e.V.

The alliance includes the Queer Center itself, the Queer*Referat, the Queer & Young group, the MeeTIN*UP project, and representatives for international, migrant and Black queer perspectives as well as for Disability Pride. The rally consists of speeches from these different groups, followed by a march through downtown Kassel.

In the evening, a DJ party follows, hosted by rotating collectives from Kassel's queer club scene. Kassel Pride sees itself less as a centrally organized festival and more as a shared platform for the city's many smaller queer groups.

This alliance structure sets Kassel apart from Pride events with a single organizing association: instead of one central body, several independent groups carry the event together, each with its own focus ranging from youth work to disability rights. The Queeres Zentrum Kassel e.V. mainly serves as the organizational and financial contact point, without dictating the content of the individual speeches.

Kassel sits on the high-speed rail lines between the Rhine-Main area and northern Germany, and between the Rhine-Ruhr region and Berlin, making it easy to reach by train from many parts of the country.

About Kassel

Kassel's Pride movement thrives with energy and inclusivity, centered around its vibrant Pride parade and celebrations. The event kicks off with a rally at Friedrichsplatz, followed by a lively march through the city center that draws crowds waving rainbow flags. The procession heads to venues like the Färberei at Universitätsplatz, where information booths, stage performances, and parties extend the festivities. Evening highlights include dazzling drag shows and DJ sets pulsing with diverse music until late night, creating a space for joy, solidarity, and resistance.

The LGBTQ+ community in Kassel is supported by key hubs like the Queer Center Kassel, a nonprofit run by and for queer individuals. This volunteer-driven space offers orientation for newcomers, newly out people, and multiply marginalized groups. It hosts events, consultations, and educational programs to fill gaps in local support, emphasizing low-threshold access and anti-discrimination policies. An awareness concept ensures respectful interactions, welcoming a spectrum of identities including asexual and aromantic folks. The center fosters exchange across varied queer communities.

Pride in Kassel echoes Germany's Christopher Street Day tradition, rooted in global struggles for rights and visibility. Local efforts, such as county initiatives with rainbow flags and queer-sensitive youth programs, promote acceptance and safe spaces. These are vital for young LGBTQ+ people facing everyday hostility. Projects like qrew Kassel add immersive audio walks sharing stories, poems, and interviews that highlight queer life in the city. Kassel stands as a beacon of queer rebellion through celebration, blending remembrance with festive defiance against exclusion.
