About Northeim Pride

Northeim, a small town in Lower Saxony, does not have a long Pride tradition, but it does have a clear motto: being queer means being anti-fascist, in Northeim and everywhere else. The march sets off from the forecourt of the train station and moves through the town centre.

Along the way there is a rally with speeches, followed by a programme that is unusually varied for a town this size: aerial acrobatics, live music and a choir performance are all part of it. The day closes with a shared outdoor picnic, open to anyone who wants to stop by.

The event is not run by a large, established organisation but by queer residents of Northeim and the surrounding area who came together because nothing like it existed in the town before. There is no registered association or office behind it, just a handful of people organising it alongside their jobs and everyday lives.

The motto is a deliberate statement. In Northeim and the rural areas around it, right-wing parties poll well in elections, so a visible queer march is not a routine entry in the town's calendar but a position that still has to be defended each time it happens. Anyone who joins the march does so in a town where queer life otherwise rarely appears in public at all.

About Northeim

In Northeim, a picturesque town in southern Lower Saxony, Germany, the LGBTQ+ community thrives as a vibrant force advocating for tolerance and diversity. Pride events serve as the heartbeat of this movement locally, typically kicking off with a rally at the Münsterplatz before a colorful parade winds through the city center. Participants wave rainbow flags, display handmade signs, and don vibrant outfits, highlighting calls for equality and acceptance. The atmosphere buzzes with music, chants, and a profound sense of solidarity that often draws applause from onlookers along the route.

The local LGBTQ+ history in Northeim echoes the broader evolution of Pride worldwide, drawing inspiration from pivotal moments of resistance against oppression. In this traditionally conservative region, community members have steadily fostered bridges through persistent advocacy. Local groups organize discussions, awareness workshops, and safe spaces, weaving queer visibility into the town's fabric. For English-speaking visitors, Northeim's Pride stands out for its intimate scale, offering an authentic glimpse into grassroots activism away from big-city spectacles. German Pride uniquely blends celebration with politics, pushing for anti-discrimination measures and full legal recognition, all while maintaining a respectful tone.

Driven by dedicated volunteers, Northeim's Pride scene continues to grow, attracting more participants each time. It not only celebrates identities but also enriches the social landscape, proving that powerful queer expression flourishes even in smaller locales. Visitors from abroad appreciate the welcoming vibe, strong security presence ensuring safety, and the emphasis on community dialogue. Northeim exemplifies how Pride can transform rural Germany into an inclusive haven, inviting everyone to join the rainbow journey.
