About Dortmund Pride

Dortmund's Pride march is the main queer demonstration in the Ruhr region, one of the most industrial parts of western Germany. It's organized by SLADO, an umbrella association that brings together the city's queer clubs, support groups and grassroots initiatives under one roof.

The march sets off from the north exit of the main train station, so arriving by train or tram couldn't be easier, the starting point sits right outside the doors. From there, the crowd moves through downtown Dortmund and finishes at Friedensplatz, a square just a short walk from the city hall.

The square doesn't empty out once the march arrives; it turns into a street festival instead. Roughly thirty information stalls line the space, run by local associations, counseling services and community groups, while a stage hosts talks, music and drag performances through the afternoon. Once the sun goes down, the party moves indoors: Domicil, one of the city's established clubs, hosts the official afterparty, with DJs U-GO-BOY and Mary Sanchez spinning a mix of pop, house and queer classics late into the night.

Several thousand people now turn out each year, and the event has grown from a small local gathering into one of the bigger Pride marches in the wider region. For a lot of queer people in and around Dortmund, this is the one day when being visible isn't just tolerated but actively celebrated, loud, colorful and right in the middle of the city rather than tucked away somewhere quiet.

Anyone new to Dortmund or just passing through can also use SLADO as a first point of contact for the city's queer scene beyond the march itself, whether that's counseling, local groups or year-round events.

About Dortmund

Dortmund's Pride celebration is one of the most vibrant events in the Ruhr area, drawing thousands to march for LGBTQ+ visibility and rights. The parade kicks off at the main train station and culminates at Friedensplatz, where a lively street festival features live performances, info booths, and community gatherings. This annual highlight embodies the spirit of unity, joy, and advocacy in Germany's industrial heartland.

The local LGBTQ+ history is rooted in longstanding organizations like KCR and SLADO e.V., which have provided counseling, cultural programs, and support for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and trans individuals for decades. Dortmund's Pride evolved from grassroots efforts to promote acceptance in a traditionally working-class city, fostering safe spaces and fighting prejudice through education and events.

For English-speaking visitors, Dortmund Pride offers a welcoming mix of high-energy parties, drag shows, and thoughtful discussions on inclusion and health. It's a quintessential German Pride experience: politically charged yet festively inclusive, with after-parties in iconic venues pulsing with queer anthems. The event emphasizes community power, safe vibes, and real connections, making it accessible for travelers seeking authentic European queer culture.

Surrounding activities like queer poetry galas and brunches enhance the festival atmosphere, turning the city into a hub of creativity and solidarity. Dortmund Pride stands as a testament to resilience, inviting everyone to celebrate diversity in a dynamic urban setting.
