About Zittau Pride
Pride in Zittau brings the event to a corner of Saxony that rarely gets attention: Upper Lusatia, close to the borders with Poland and the Czech Republic. Since its first edition, it has been organized by a volunteer core team that grew out of a youth initiative and is currently working on formally registering as an association.
The traditional meeting point is the market square, from where the march moves through town before an afternoon program with musical surprises rounds things off. The point isn't really the size of the event. It's the fact that it exists at all: in Upper Lusatia, there are few other chances for queer people to be visible in public.
The team behind the event includes students, working professionals, and political activists from very different backgrounds, backed by a wider network of volunteers. They regularly look for more help, whether for the awareness team, for donations, or just for hands-on support with organizing.
What started in Zittau as a small, local initiative has turned into a fixed yearly date, and it makes a point that queer life doesn't stop at the edge of Saxony's bigger cities. It has a place in the countryside too.
About Zittau
Zittau has its own Pride. The small town in southern Upper Lusatia belongs to the district of Görlitz in Saxony and sits right at the point where Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic meet. For several years now, a march for queer visibility, acceptance and equal rights has made its way through the town every September. The organisers describe it as a response to a simple problem: in rural Upper Lusatia, queer people often have nowhere safe to meet.
Pride in Zittau is run by a volunteer core team of students, working people and political activists from the area, backed by a wider circle of helpers. The local branch of the German Child Protection Association provides the organisational framework, and the march receives funding through the town's Partnership for Democracy programme. The local alliance „Zittau ist bunt“ helps with planning. The idea came from young people in Zittau. The march day comes with a supporting programme, and workshops and informal meet-ups beforehand are meant to reach people outside the community as well. Volunteers can sign up as stewards or join the awareness team.
As at many smaller Prides in eastern Germany, there have been counter-protests in Zittau. The police accompany the march.
Pride in Görlitz and its Polish twin town Zgorzelec started at the same time as Zittau's and takes place in late September. Its route crosses the Neisse and runs through both towns, so it literally crosses the German-Polish border. The nearest big Pride is in Dresden, organised by its own association and held in June. Saxony has a long season of Pride events from spring to autumn, including many in small towns, so it is easy to combine more than one.
