About Amsterdam PrideAs of 2026

Every summer, the canals of Amsterdam become the stage for one of the most spectacular Pride celebrations in the world. Boats of every shape and size sail slowly along the Prinsengracht and onto the Amstel, carrying dancers, drag performers, activists and thousands of supporters past crowds gathered along the quays, bridges and windows overlooking the water.

The Canal Parade sits at the heart of a citywide programme that stretches from Dam Square, where a mainstage hosts live music and community voices, to Museumplein, where open-air concerts draw performers from across the music and drag world. Alongside the parties, a Pride Village and cultural events create space for reflection, debate and remembrance, honouring the activists whose work made queer life more visible and more free.

Amsterdam holds a special place in queer history: it is home to the Homomonument, the first public memorial in the world to people persecuted for their sexual orientation, and the city hosted the world's first legal marriages of same-sex couples. That legacy runs through the celebration, which combines protest with joy, insisting that visibility and equal rights remain unfinished work in many parts of the world.

Organised by a dedicated Pride foundation together with hundreds of volunteers, the event welcomes visitors from across Europe and beyond, positioning Amsterdam as a meeting point for the international queer community. Whether watching the boats glide past from a canal-side terrace or joining the crowds on Dam Square, visitors experience a celebration that is at once a party, a demonstration and a statement of solidarity with queer people everywhere.

About Amsterdam

Amsterdam stands as a beacon for Pride celebrations in the Netherlands, renowned for its spectacular Canal Parade that transforms the city's iconic canals into a vibrant waterway of color and joy. Boats adorned with rainbow flags and creative displays glide along the Prinsengracht and Amstel, drawing massive crowds who line the banks to cheer and celebrate. This floating spectacle is the highlight of Pride Amsterdam, surrounded by a week of parties, cultural events, exhibitions, and discussions centered in lively areas like Reguliersdwarsstraat.

The LGBTQ+ community in Amsterdam boasts a rich history of resilience and openness. Dating back to the 17th century, the city's gay scene gathered discreetly in taverns and informal meeting spots around town. In the 20th century, establishments such as 't Mandje, the oldest lesbian bar, became safe havens fostering community spirit. Pride Amsterdam embodies emancipation, embracing multicultural groups including Arab and Jewish participants, and promotes global solidarity on issues like anti-discrimination and social justice.

For English-speaking visitors, Amsterdam's Pride offers an unparalleled experience of tolerance and festivity. The event's emphasis on diversity resonates universally, making it a must-visit for those seeking authentic queer celebration. Visitors from the UK, US, and beyond appreciate the blend of high-energy parties and thoughtful programming that highlights ongoing fights for equality. The city's reputation as the Gay Capital of the World ensures a welcoming vibe where everyone can express themselves freely.

Pride Amsterdam transcends mere entertainment; it's a powerful affirmation of love, acceptance, and progress. The parade and surrounding events invite international guests to join in honoring the community's enduring legacy and commitment to a more inclusive world.
