Puerto Rico's Pride movement has evolved from humble beginnings into a vibrant celebration of LGBTQ+ rights and resilience. The inaugural Pride march took place in San Juan in 1990, when a group of brave individuals paraded down Ashford Avenue to honor those lost to the AIDS crisis of the 1980s and to challenge police harassment and silencing regulations. Over the decades, the LGBTTIQ Pride March has become a cornerstone of the fight for equality, social justice, and human rights.
Key legal victories include the decriminalization of homosexuality in 2003, bans on workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in 2013, and marriage equality in 2015. Today's marches continue advocating for improved healthcare, full recognition of trans identities, bans on conversion therapy, and protection against hate crimes, particularly targeting trans individuals.
The San Juan Pride Parade stands as the island's largest event, typically held on the first weekend of June. It kicks off at Parque del Indio in Condado and concludes at Parque del Tercer Milenio in Escambrón, a beachside park featuring stages for performances and parties. A week later, Orgullo Boquerón in Cabo Rojo draws crowds as the second-biggest gathering, blending activism with festive energy.
These celebrations highlight Puerto Rico's progress while addressing ongoing challenges like economic instability and violence. For visitors, they offer an immersive experience of Caribbean flair, with music, dance, and community spirit. Pride in Puerto Rico embodies not just commemoration but a living commitment to a more inclusive future, attracting global participants who join in solidarity.
