About Essen Pride

Ruhr Pride is the largest Pride celebration in the Ruhr region of Germany, organized by the nonprofit association ruhrPRIDE e.V. in the city of Essen. At its heart is a large march that sets off from a car park at the Essen exhibition grounds, winds through the Rüttenscheid district, passes close to the main railway station, and finishes in the heart of the city.

Marchers carry flags, hand-painted banners and plenty of glitter to call for equal rights, protection and recognition for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex and queer people. Once the march reaches the city centre, Kennedyplatz and Friedensplatz turn into a lively street festival with several stages. Live bands, drag performances, DJ sets and short political talks follow one another throughout the afternoon and evening, framed by an entertaining host who keeps the crowd engaged between acts. Community groups, counselling services and local organisations line the squares with information booths.

In the days leading up to the march, a dedicated Pride Week fills Essen with a colourful side programme, including a warm-up party in a local bar, an ecumenical church service, literary readings and a karaoke night that runs late into the night.

Ruhr Pride positions itself as a platform for visibility and solidarity, bringing together the queer community of the Ruhr area and its allies to celebrate diversity and push for an open, inclusive society. The event is carried by volunteers and supported by local institutions, businesses and the city administration.

About Essen

Essen, in Germany's Ruhr region, hosts a vibrant Pride movement centered around the ruhrPRIDE event, drawing thousands to celebrate and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. The day kicks off with a protest march through the city center from the fairgrounds to Kennedyplatz, where a massive street festival unfolds with stages, artists, exhibitors, and live music extending into the night.

The local LGBTQ+ community boasts a rich history of resilience. Early gatherings against exclusion and stigma took place in cultural venues like Zeche Carl, uniting gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, and trans individuals. What began as modest stages in front of landmarks like the Marktkirche evolved into a major regional powerhouse, backed by groups such as ruhrPRIDE e.V. and Essen Andersrum e.V. These origins highlight the community's courage in claiming public space and fighting for equality.

For English-speaking visitors, Essen's Pride stands out in the German context as the largest in the Ruhr area, attracting participants from across the region. Key demands include criminalizing discrimination and amending the constitution to protect sexual identity. Ecumenical services led by local clergy add a layer of broad solidarity. The event blends activism with joy, featuring fashion shows, DJ performances, clothing swaps, and after-parties in spots like PM93, making it a full-day immersion in queer culture.

Pride in Essen emphasizes inclusivity, inviting allies to join the march and festival. It's a powerful statement of diversity in an industrially shaped city, offering international travelers a glimpse into Germany's progressive queer scene while honoring global roots like the Stonewall uprising.
