About Rathenow Pride

Pride in Rathenow is organised by the town's Kinder- und Jugendparlament (children and youth parliament), working together with the regional "Partnerschaft für Demokratie" democracy programme for Westhavelland and Nauen, and supported by the queer initiative Havel der Vielfalt from nearby Brandenburg an der Havel.

It grew out of a first, smaller edition and has been run by the same young organising team ever since. Locally it is described as the town's only public event built entirely around democracy and participation, which fits its origin in the youth parliament rather than in an established queer scene.

The day itself follows a simple pattern: a march through the town centre, followed by a stage programme with music, speeches and a panel discussion on the Rideplatz, where information stalls from regional groups also set up. The march relies almost entirely on volunteers, run by teenagers and young adults alongside school or an apprenticeship.

Rathenow is a small town in rural Brandenburg, and Pride here carries a different weight than in a big city: it is often the only visible queer event for many kilometres around, run on a shoestring budget and small public grants that are not guaranteed from one year to the next.
