About Uelzen Pride

Uelzen is holding its first-ever Pride, organised not by an established Pride association but by a coalition of local political and youth groups, including Die Linke Uelzen and the Linksjugend ['solid]. For a Hanseatic town of this size, that in itself is notable: there was no existing organisation to run it, so a handful of groups from across the local left decided to build one together.

The route starts and ends at Herzogenplatz, the town's central square, with a march winding through Uelzen's town centre in between. Speeches open the day at the square, and the afternoon closes back where it started, with information stalls and live music keeping the atmosphere going after the march itself has finished.

Being a first edition changes what the event is about. There's no established format to fall back on, no returning crowd size to compare against — just a group of organisations betting that enough people in and around Uelzen want a visible, public queer event of their own, rather than travelling to Lüneburg or Hannover for one. Handing the organising work to a coalition of party-youth and civic groups, rather than a dedicated Pride association, says something about how much of this runs on volunteer effort alone.

For queer people in the region, the day offers a chance to be seen at home rather than somewhere else — a small but concrete shift in what's considered normal on Uelzen's streets, even if only for one afternoon a year.
