Emden Pride 2027

Emden has its own Pride march. It is organised by Queeres Netzwerk Ostfriesland, a non-profit association set up to connect and support queer groups and initiatives across the largely rural region of East Frisia. People had talked about a region-wide association for years before it was finally founded. Emden's Pride was added a few years ago and has been held every year since, usually in June. The motto on the organisers' website is in Low German: "Wi sünd ümmer dar!", meaning "We are always here".

The event is a demonstration with a clear political message, not a commercial festival. A volunteer organising team meets every Thursday during the planning period and actively looks for new members. The association describes the work honestly: no march happens without many meetings with the city's public order office, the police and the administration. Donations can be earmarked either for the Pride march or for the association's queer youth group.

It has not always been easy. On the fringes of one Emden Pride, a participant from Hamburg was beaten and kicked in the city centre by several teenagers, and police investigated three minors. The organisers responded by increasing their security staff from ten to sixty people and carried on. Their head was quoted in regional media saying that fear now rides along on the float. Lower Saxony has recorded a more than fivefold rise in anti-LGBTIQ offences within a few years.

Emden is part of a wider trend. According to the association, there are now many Pride events across East Frisia, held together by the idea that the region is diverse. Visitors who also want to experience a large Pride can head to Oldenburg. The Oldenburg Pride, known as Nordwest, traditionally takes place on the third Saturday of June. The city of Oldenburg puts attendance at around ten thousand people for the march and rally, which makes it one of the largest in Germany. The programme includes a closing party, an evening of small-stage performances and a culture festival. Regional trains connect Emden with Oldenburg via Leer, so both events can easily be combined.
