About Leer Pride
Leer's Pride march brings Ostfriesland's queer community and allies out onto the streets. The event is organised by Queer in Leer e.V., a registered association based at Café International on Kupenwarf. The march sets off from the car park by the old customs house, passes the Mühlenplatz and moves through the pedestrian zone, continues along Heisfelder Straße and Ostersteg, and loops back via Bürgermeister-Ehrlenholtz-Straße and Bahnhofsring to the starting point.
Back at Liesel-Außen-Platz, right next to the customs house, the march turns into a rally. Speeches alternate with live music, while information stalls from various organisations line the square. Leer's Pride has drawn support well beyond the local queer community: both the federal government's commissioner for queer life and the town's mayor have addressed the crowd here. Around a thousand people usually take part.
Anyone wanting to keep the day going has somewhere to go: Mulligans Pub on Heisfelder Straße hosts a free Pride Night in the evening, with celebrations running late. Police escort the march and close parts of the town centre to traffic for the duration.
Leer's Pride is one of the newer editions in Lower Saxony and has grown steadily since it started. For anyone living in or visiting the region, it offers an unpretentious, small-town Pride without the crowds of a big city — a march, a rally and a party packed into one afternoon.
