About Verden Pride

Verden's Pride march is organized by the local association that formed in the wake of the town's first-ever Pride demonstration. That first march was set up by members of the local queer community, among them Noa Baumann and Shay Heemsoth-Ohlmeyer, who wanted to show that queer life isn't confined to big cities. The debut march already drew several hundred people — a striking turnout for a town of this size.

What began as a one-off demonstration has since grown into a registered nonprofit working to build lasting structures for queer people in a rural setting: counseling services, regular meeting points, educational outreach in schools, and anti-discrimination work all fall under its stated mission. The association works closely with Queer Cities e.V., a Bremen-based network that connects and advises queer initiatives outside the major cities and helped guide the group from its earliest days.

The march itself remains at the core of the group's work: a rally with speeches, followed by a demonstration through the town. For the area between Bremen and Hanover, it stands as one of the few standalone Pride events and a fixed point for queer visibility in a largely rural surrounding region that had little queer infrastructure of its own before.

About Verden

In Verden, a quaint town in Lower Saxony, Germany, the Pride movement thrives as a beacon of diversity and acceptance within the LGBTQ+ community. Pride events bring together locals and visitors for colorful parades, informative booths, and cultural programs that celebrate visibility for lesbians, gays, bisexuals, trans, and intersex individuals. Held in the scenic Allerpark, these gatherings highlight the vibrant spirit of the area, fostering unity and advocacy for equal rights.

The local LGBTQ+ history in Verden reflects remarkable dedication and grassroots efforts. Committed activists have established an association dedicated to organizing Pride and creating year-round safe spaces. This group connects with broader networks, provides educational workshops for schools and businesses, and offers counseling against discrimination. A standout feature is the collaborative dialogue with local authorities, including police presence at informal stands to build trust and understanding. In a smaller town like Verden, this demonstrates how community-driven initiatives can rapidly evolve into enduring structures.

For an English-speaking audience, Verden's Pride stands out in Germany's landscape of celebrations, blending remembrance of global milestones like the Stonewall uprising with contemporary pushes for inclusion. Unlike massive urban events, Verden emphasizes intimate, regional connections and accessibility for all ages. Young people receive support during coming-out processes, while older members find camaraderie. The movement addresses rural challenges, where queer lives often remain hidden, making Verden a model for empowerment beyond big cities.

Pride in Verden invites everyone to challenge biases and embrace solidarity. With parties, discussions, and outreach, it creates welcoming environments. This local scene enriches the region, showcasing courage and community as cornerstones of the ongoing fight for acceptance worldwide.
